Is There An Acne Cure? 4 Guidelines To Follow

Acne, a pattern of unsightly blemishes typically seen on the face is a common occurrence in the teen years. Acne vulgaris or acne is made up of inflamed follicles or papules, also called comedones. In the worst case scenario acne can be seen as pustules or nodules on the skin. Not limited to the face, acne can attack the back, the neck, the shoulders and the chest as well.

Almost 90 per cent of teens will experience some degree of acne; however, the majority will notice a clearing of the skin as they get older. For some, however, acne can remain with them indefinitely.

There are things that can be done to get rid of acne and possibly even cure acne. These measures to get rid of acne and or cure acne would include self-help measures and in some cases obtaining outside treatment from a medical professional.

To help yourself get rid of acne and or cure acne you can:

  • Wash your skin regularly. When you wash your skin you are taking away the bacteria and the oil that invade it. These are the two primary culprits in acne.
  • Cleaning your hands prior to washing your face and directly afterwards will help to alleviate transmitting the bacteria so that no other areas of the skin are infected.
  • Use over-the-counter agents that contain benzoyl peroxide. This topically applied medicated treatment can help to get rid of acne or cure acne in its mild form.

You would wash your skin as mentioned above and then apply this over-the-counter medication to the affected areas a couple of times each day. This medication is available in varying strengths. Approximately 75 per cent of people will find that this method to get rid of acne and or cure acne is effective. However, this medication can cause the skin to experience dryness or irritation.

Other methods to get rid of acne and or cure acne require professional medical treatment. These treatments could include the following.

ORAL ANTIBIOTICS

Oral antibiotics typically prescribed for the treatment of acne are tetracycline, erythromycin and doxycycline to name a few. These antibiotics are not over-the-counter medications and a doctor’s prescription is needed. There are some side effects that may be experienced when using oral antibiotics. This treatment is not used until the above measures have been taken first and have been unsuccessful.

TOPICAL ANTIBIOTICS

Using topical antibiotics reacts in much the same way as its oral form does, but without the side effects. This method, however, is impractical if acne is severe and extends to various parts of the body other than the face. Again, this method is not used until the above measures have proven to be unsuccessful.

MORE EXTENSIVE TREATMENTS

For most acne cases the above measures usually prove to get rid of acne and or cure acne. If they do not help the acne problem other forms of more intensive treatment is available. These treatments could include hormone therapy, Dermabrasion, topical or oral retinoid substances, Laser treatments, phototherapy and or surgery.  However, these methods are for the more extreme acne cases that do not respond to the other treatments.
